Giving Tuesday is celebrated every Tuesday after Thanksgiving, a global generosity movement that was created in 2012 to encourage people to do good during the holidays. But with so many fantastic organizations, it can be tough to decide the best Giving Tuesday charities to donate to.

Here, is a roundup of a few non-profits for Giving Tuesday, along with some handy expert tips on how to choose the right charity for you.

Helen Keller Intl is continuing the work of author and activist Helen Keller. The charity’s Vitamin A supplementation program is one of GiveWell‘s top-rated charities, aiming to combat Vitamin A deficiency in those living in poverty. A simple twice-yearly dose can reduce childhood mortality by more than 25 percent. The Vitamin A program has been noted as one of the most cost-effective, high-impact treatments in the world. To donate, you can make a one-time payment or set up a monthly gift.

Another highly GiveWell ranked charity is Malaria Consortium, an organization founded in 2003 that specializes in the comprehensive control of malaria and other communicable diseases. The charity works tirelessly to save lives and improve health in Africa and Asia through evidence-based programs that combat targeted diseases and promote universal health coverage.

When choosing their top charities, GiveWell rate non-profits based on analysis. If you’re torn on which organization to donate to for Giving Tuesday 2022, always consider donating to evidence-backed charities, rather than marketing alone.

Evidence has found that the most cost-effective way to donate to charity is by giving to poorer countries. New Incentives provides small cash incentives to caregivers in Nigeria. The charity’s mission is to boost child vaccination rates and save young lives. To date, over 900,000 infants have been served by the program and there is an 86.69 percent retention rate through the vaccination cycle. You can donate to New Incentives through several funding partners.

If you prefer to donate to a charity closer to home, use it as opportunity to give to a charity that serves the most vulnerable populations — those in need of housing, food, mental health support, older adults, and more. Henry Street Settlement is a non-profit social service agency based out of Manhattan, providing a range of social and healthcare services to New Yorkers of all ages. Barbara Kancelbaum, Vice President of Marketing & Communications at Henry Street Settlement, recommend that donors choose an organization that is deeply connected to its community.

“It is through unrestricted funding from individuals that organizations like ours are able to respond to those immediate needs creatively and nimbly, building new programming rapidly as needed,” she said. “We encourage donors to take the time to look at an organization’s website, annual report, and other materials. It’s not just numbers that demonstrate impact but stories of real people whose lives have been transformed by the organization.”

Henry Street Settlement started up a range of new programs in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, including three food-home-delivery pantries, a Helpline, a community response team made up of youth in need of summer jobs, and emergency cash assistance. The organization also offers public year-round events like art shows and walking tours, which are a great way of donating to a worthy cause while having fun.

White Ribbon USA‘s mission is to reduce and prevent domestic violence and engage more men supporting all efforts to end gender-based violence and discrimination towards women.  The charity runs a variety of workshops and events to implement awareness and educate, along with offering safe sanctuaries and shelters for victims of domestic abuse.

Veronika Mudra, CEO of White Ribbon USA, founded the charity after her own experiences. It’s a cause that’s very close to her heart — something that she recommends taking into account when choosing a local charity.

“First of all, choose a cause that is close to your heart or corresponds with your own experience,” she said. “[Also consider] something you want to [see] change. Check your area to see if there’s a local non-profit or a branch of the larger organization operating in your area,”

Charity supporters can donate to White Ribbon USA with monetary contributions, although giving your dollars isn’t the only way you can show your support. You can get involved by becoming an ambassador or spokesperson, or by spreading the word among family and friends.

“If you’re not in a position to donate money to your chosen charity, you can volunteer for non-profit, donate goods and services, pro bono time, or offer brand and corporate collaborations.” Mudra adds.

Whether you’re donating abroad or closer to home, don’t rule out donating to animals. Animal charities such as The Humane League are extremely effective in improving animal welfare. Through various campaigns, the organization has implemented several life-changing policies across the United States, from cage-free policies to updating welfare standards in restaurants and retailers around the country. To give back to non-humans, you can donate a monetary value or get involved through a wide range of events and fundraisers.
